Literature Text

::Note: This character is designed to develop and grow throughout my RP experiences, making him gradually stronger, faster, more powerful, etc. In light of this you must never assume him to be the same if you encounter him in RP more than once::

Name: Wuruhi (Wairua) Whatumanawa.
Meaning: Wolf Heart. Wairua means Spirit/Soul, and is a given nickname.

Age: Roughly 180 to 200 Years.

Gender: Male.

Race: Lycan.

Height: 6'4".
In Lycan Form: 7'2".

Den: Pango Huruhuru.
Meaning: Black Fur.

Appearance:
          Human:
In his human form, Wairua is a tall Māori man who appears to be in his early to mid twenties. His head is beset by jet black hair and the left hand side of his face is covered with a traditional Māori moko (Tattoo).

His eyes are pale brown, who's inner corona's are laced with a much darker brown, giving a semi-radiating dark-to-light effect.

Around his neck sits a hei-tiki, a greenstone carving gifted to him by his hapū (Tribe).

He carries with him a mere, and a greenstone adze, a weapon and a tool, respectively.

His physique is a large build, strength above speed, though he is capable of sudden, fast movements, he does not have the build for flowing speed or agility including a series of fast motions.

Wairua carries a dark shoulder bag for food, clothing and to keep his possessions/tools.

          Lycan:
In his Lycan form, Wairua has black skin, and exceptionally thick, soft black fur (Of around an inch's length) which covers his entire body.

His eyes are the typical Lycan shade of black, however the sclera retain their white.

His hei-tiki stays on during the transformation, and can be seen perched into a crest of fur at the top of his chest, the deep green contrasting with the heavy black, the thin black chord hidden beneath the fur.

His shoulder bag is used to keep his clothing when he transforms, and can be worn in his Lycan form.

Personality: Wairua is strong minded, and after nearly two hundred years has developed some strong opinions attributing to his beliefs. He is open to change, and interested enough in other cultures not to dismiss them, though he retains a powerful cultural identity of his own.

When he finds a person he respects above most others, we will present them with a hand carved hei-tiki.

He is very pack minded, an element not unlike the tribal nature of his people.

Fitting in easily with people, he is a capable businessman, and easily with the times. Though he prefers spending his time in nature, away from the smog riddled cities and tourist centres. Not being a loner by nature, he is always accompanied by pack members.

Background: Wairua was born under the shadow of Aoraki, New Zealand's tallest mountain, in the mid-regions of the South Island. His tribe (A subtribe [hapū] of the Ngāi Tahu) were migrating north for the coming Winter.

He grew up on the land, learning both English and Māori as his tribe frequented greater contact with the Europeans during the early stages of the nineteenth century onwards.

The night he was turned, Wairua was hunting with the male members of his tribe, searching for a mythical creature who had taken a woman the night before. As they hunted under the clear starry night in the forests along the north-western coast, they were ambushed by three Lycans who had come to New Zealand in trade ships. Wairua was spared death because (As he was being bitten) a tribemate thrust a Mere (A Māori club) into the attacking creature from behind, dealing a striking blow.

When Wairua and his tribe realised what he was, he was not shunned, but in some ways revered. Believing him to be the embodiment of the Wolf spirit Wairua found himself capable of protecting his tribe from outsiders, especially during events like the New Zealand Musket Wars. In subsequent attacks from the 'wolf spirits', two more Lycans presented themselves, of which Wairua was the eldest.

Unfortunately, with the increasing size of both native and European settlements, his tribe was forced to settled down, and over several generations began to dwindle. Eventually, the tribe agreed to become a part of another tribe. Given the Christianisation of most of the native population, and after he had learned to control his transformations, Wairua decided it was time to leave his people, knowing there was not likely to be another major conflict.

Travelling by ship through Polynesia, Wairua never met any other Immortal. Using skills as a stone and woodcarver learned as a young man, Wairua traded and earned a living as a traditional shipbuilder, Tiki carver and greenstone shaper.

After a few years on the move, he decided to follow western mythology and travel to Europe, where the first wolf spirits came from on their trading ship.

With him are the two other surviving tribe mates from the Lycan attack. The three of them are a close knit family, and consider one another brothers. Wairua wouldn't mind finding a home to settle down in. Coming from the South Island of Aotearoa, he's interested in a colder climate, but is also interested in there being space, a sizeable portion of land where he and his brother Lycans can be themselves, not only culturally, but as Lycans in Lycan form when they feel like taking on their 'spirit forms'.

Powers:
Wairua believes that all forms of life contain mana, an energy source that forms magic, souls, and other natural, as well as supernatural forces. Though he does not believe he has any distinct powers, he does believe his mana is responsible for his ability to heal rapidly, to not age, have exceptional strength and senses, etc. That it is a part of his spirit, and accompanied by the spirit of the wolf that shares his body, and who's wolf body he shares, respectively.

He believes this mana also exists in significant forms such as greenstone, of which hei-tiki (Greenstone necklaces), clubs and tools are often made from.

-> Weapons: Refer to the images presented in the "Artist's Comments" section below the entry for reference material showing the Mere, and the Adze.

          Human:
              - His Mere (A 35cm long greenstone club).
              - His Adze (A greenstone wood-carving tool resembling at mattock).

          Lycan:
              - His Claws
              - Strength
              - Teeth/Jaw

Extra Info:
In his Lycan form, Wairua is not adverse to using his Adze and Mere. His Lycan strength adds an enormous amount of force to his weapons and the strength of the stone makes them exceptionally devastating in combat.

Regarding His Name:
His friends often refer to him as Wairua, meaning "soul" or "spirit" in Māori, which originally came from ancient legends of men who embodied the spirits of animals (Like the 'Legends of Maui', a saga referring to a demi-god of Polynesia who could take the form of the Maui bird).

Though wolves are not native to Aotearoa, his ability to embody the form of a Lycan gave him the status of wolf spirit within the tribe of his homeland.

Regarding his Den name:
In Māori, Pango Huruhuru means "Black Fur" - This term was originally used to differentiate Wairua and his brothers from the bluer, less furry Lycans they encountered in Europe, but has become the name they use to refer to themselves as in the context of a group at any time or place.

Regarding The Immortal Races:
Until now, Wairua has only ever met Lycans. His discovery of the greater Therian world, as well as Vampires, is fresh, as he has never been a part of the European world until now. As such, he has no knowledge of the wars and struggles, and has no racial prejudices towards the various Immortal races.

He has, however, noted the significant distinction between the smells of Therians, and the smells of Vampyres.

I put a fair amount of time into making sure the names, and basic background were historically correct. If you find more accurate terminology or find I have some facts incorrect about time periods, please tell me. I'd love to make sure this is as accurate as possible.

NOTES: For some people the above link for "Hei-tiki and Mere" appears as 404. Try this link if that happens.

I have the sneaking suspicion that creating character sheets like this borders on what it's like to create a furry persona. I don't know about you, but the anthropological aspect of the whole idea comparative to the whole culture developed in DAUnderworldRPG is worth looking into in some form of case study or observational analysis.
